I developed a random film I had lying around a while back and to my suprise, half of it was from Ebisu, Japan when we went in 2010! Enjoy these two of the clean red 180SX at Kita Course. REPCO BRABHAM BT21A AM226 – 1600cc of 1966 twin cam, cigar chassis joy
We went out to Hampton Downs on Saturday for the first race day of the New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing – Celebrating Denny Hulme, one of my favourite events of the year by a long shot! Apart from walking around the pits with an open jaw and drooling on everything, I shot 1100 digital photos, 4 35mm films and one colour 120 film on the Rolleiflex… so I have a bit of content coming up! The event is running again next weekend and I highly recommend going to watch, the thunder of the formula 5000 field on the grid is something everyone must experience.
Highlights of the event include: the Kenny Smith battle in F5000, watching the Lotus Europa ALMOST beat out a big bearly corvette (would have had him sans the straights), the ZACKSPEED MK2 Escort, talking to the old racers who where stoked to see someone shooting on a Rolleiflex, shooting with my 500mm takumar lens after a long hiatus, Bruce Manon’s MK2 RS2000, and oogling all the cool suspension design.

I went to the Barry Sheene Trans Tasman Challenge at Hampton Downs a while back and shot some photos of the pretty amazing field that was out there. I was looking back through some of my posts when I remembered I forgot to post some of my favourites! Here are a couple with more to come, man that was an awesome day of racing. I’ve become lazy at updating beeoneoneoh because after following a few incredibly well documented and fast moving builds, I hardly feel motivated to do so. Well I have some news at the least so here’s where I am:
The last post I did on the 120 I was driving it up and down the driveway but it was lacking a few crucial things which I’ve now resolved.
- Alternator now charges the battery
- Swaybar is now installed with new bolts/nuts and I’ve cleaned up the links. I took out the thicker 120Y bar because I thought it wasn’t helping with understeer with the A15 in there. I may put it back but the factory one is fine for now. Note, when you properly lower a B110/B120 the swaybar rotates and touches the front of the sump. I made shortened linkages to fix this but with the SR sitting nicely into the firewall, I no longer need them. Factory items work perfect.
- I went around the engine bay and tightened a bunch of things which I had left finger tight as it was all being taken off so frequently. This definitely fixed a few issues.
- I went through the wiring with a diagram and deleted some unnecessary items and connected everything properly. I still need to figure out a few things but I did get the use of many items back which helps when you’re trying to test drive around the hood at night.
This week I drove it around the block with unsatisfactory results but it drove non the less. I figured that having fuel in the tank (that wasn’t stale) was a good place to start. I drove it again tonight after doing the above with very good results. Clean power delivery, and a smooth induction howl through the valley. I’m stoked, over the moon in fact. Time to get serious about knocking this bastard out so I can drive it without the fear of loosing my license.

When I was in Australia this February I caught up with Ian, a good mate of mine who just so happens to be a Datsun nerd like myself. Between him and his dad he has 3 Datsun 1000s and 3 Datsun 1200 coupes including a rally modified one. Much to my delight we went out to the ‘shed’, which may I add is amazing, and cut up the floor of the KB10 on the hoist to fit a fuel cell. It is being built with the engine which used to be in Ian’s street car, a modified A15 which he let me drive a few years ago around the hills in Wollongong.
We hung out, drunk beer, ate pizza and I became familiar with a car I have been lusting over for years, the Datsun 1000 coupe. I rang out the little A10 in the KB10 in the last photo around the block and fell in love. One day I will own one of these cars! I’d just like to note a practical point: Datsun 1000s don’t have chassis rails running down the floor pan, the rails over the rear axles are perfect for notching and slamming out the front transverse leaf suspension is easy as anything… just saying.

There’s an unusual amount of colour on here at the moment so I hope to rectify that with a film photo of Keisuke’s beater notch 86.

I am excited… so incredibly excited, for what 2012 will bring (apart from the end of the world) in terms of this group of cars and dudes.
